How Love Was Saved by Fire Damage
They knew that they had to find a way to get out. The heat was excruciating. The smoke began to blanket the room in a dark cloud. How the fire started no one knew. All they knew was they had to survive it.
Rick and Leslie had been dating since they were in high school. When they went to separate colleges, they thought that their relationship would end but somehow they made it. After college they both moved to the city and got great jobs. It seemed as if life was perfect. They had gone out to dinner that night to celebrate Rick’s promotion. He had been working so hard at his real estate company and now he had finally been recognized for all that effort. However, what Leslie didn’t know was that Rick was going to propose to her that night. They had been together for almost 9 years. He had wanted to marry her from the day he met her but he wanted to wait until they had both finished school and got settled into their lives before he popped the question. It was to be a night to remember. Neither one of them knew how memorable it would be.
Leslie coughed as the smoke began to fill her lungs. Rick held her hand and led her through the maze of fire and smoke. Their friend Roger owned the restaurant and for a moment they both thought of how this would affect him. He had invested his life savings into the restaurant. Now in the blink of an eye it was engulfed by flames. Everyone knew the place would be eaten up by fire damage. Hopefully, the insurance would be enough to cover it all. As Rick led Leslie through the smoke, they both saw a glimpse of light. Excitement swelled in them both, they knew they were going to make it. As they stepped from the blanket of smoke, all they could see were bands of red and blue lights illuminating the night sky. Thank goodness fire and police personnel were there. They were a sight that both were happy to see. As they looked around they were elated to see Roger’s face looking back at them. They knew this was difficult for him as he stood there watching his business being consumed by fire.
The firemen worked overtime that night putting out the fire and when all was said and done, the only thing that stood before them was half of a shell of what used to be the most popular restaurant in town. Rick and Leslie joined Roger and his wife Becky as they surveyed the fire damage. It was amazing how much was still left intact.
“The fire damage isn’t as bad as I thought,” Roger said trying to look optimistic.
“Not as bad as you thought!” Becky exclaimed, “It’s consumed everything!”
Becky’s face fell into her hands and she began to cry uncontrollably. Leslie put her arms around her and comforted her friend.
“I’m sorry,” Becky said, “I am going on about the fire damage and should be more thankful that you all are safe.”
“It’s ok,” Leslie replied, “It’s a natural reaction.” Leslie scanned the ruins and flashed back to the night before. She felt so bad for her friends but also so lucky at the same time and thankful.
“We are all together and alive,” Roger said as he grabbed Becky’s hand, “This restaurant can be replaced. It’s just fire damage, we can rebuild.”
“I say we celebrate good friends and life,” Becky said as she wiped the tears from her eyes, “Let’s start fresh and go out tonight.”
“Sounds like a good idea,” Rick said. He reached into his pocket to grab his car keys and realized that he still had the ring in his pocket. With everything that had happened he never got to ask Leslie to marry him. After last night he knew time was something that shouldn’t be wasted. Leslie had already started walking away from him.
“Guys,” he said, “Hold on for a second.” Everyone stopped and looked at him. He wasn’t nervous last night so why was he so nervous now. He felt like he had a frog in his throat. He grabbed Leslie’s hand and held it tight.
“What is it?” she asked him. As he got down on one knee in the middle of the fire damaged wreckage, Leslie felt as though she would faint.
“Life is short but my love for you will last a lifetime,” Rick said, “Last night we came so close to life ending and I would have never gotten the chance to let you know how much you mean to me.”
Tears filled Leslie’s eyes. Roger and Becky stood there in amazement. They knew if anyone would pick this time and this place to propose, it would be Rick.
Rick continued by saying, “Before I met you my life was lonely and empty. When you came into it, I felt I had a meaning to my life, something worth living for. I wake up and go to bed, thinking of you. You’re on my mind every moment of every day. My life is meant to be with you and no one else but you. I love you more than the air I breathe and last night I would have given it all up just to see you smile one more day. Marry me Leslie. Make me happy everyday for the rest our lives and I promise you a love like you’ve never known.”
Leslie stood there in utter shock. She knew he loved her and she never doubted that love for one second. Rick was always there for her and with him she felt safe but most importantly she felt loved.
“YES!!!!” she screamed as she wrapped her arms around him and held him tight, “Yes, I’ll marry you. I love you.”
It was sealed with a kiss in a room full of fire damage and friends. It couldn’t get any better than that.
